Thomas Zanios – A Beloved Son, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and Friend

Tula Zanios will be greatly missed as she was an amazing daughter, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Our hearts break for all who knew and loved her.

Gemspring Capital, a private equity firm focused on lower middle market companies, recently named Thomas Zanios as its Managing Director after nine years as Principal at Odyssey Investment Partners.

Early Life and Education

Tula Karrant was born premature in Fort Smith, Arkansas to John and Ana Karrant. Their doctors believed they wouldn’t make it out alive, yet both girls proved otherwise by becoming extremely resilient under their four older sisters’ care – including four older sister who took turns loving and cherishing them.

She was an amazing daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandfather and friend whose love was felt by everyone she encountered. She leaves behind Jamie and Nancy Zanios; grandchildren Xavier Brock-Zanios, Alicia Zanios Thomas Zanios Whitney Bishop Andy Bishop great grandchildren Emily Eliza Zanios Willa and Otto Bishop as well as many adoring nieces and nephews who cherish every memory she left them.

Gemspring Capital, a private equity firm focused on investments in lower middle market companies, announced today that Zanios will join their firm as managing director based out of Westport Connecticut headquarters.

Professional Career

Tom was an amazing man who left an immeasurable mark on all he met, showing immense love and kindness towards family, friends, and coworkers alike. His smile will long be remembered. Tom leaves behind his wife Tula; two children Thomas and Alicia; Valli Zanios-Dockum of Mason City; four grandchildren Xavier Brock-Zanios, Brendan Castricone, Ryan Rostel as well as Luna and Elijah Castricone who will miss him; as well as his brother Chris who hails from Tarpon Springs Florida.

Prior to joining Gemspring Capital, Mr. Anderson served as a principal at Odyssey Investment Partners where he was active in all facets of investment process including origination, due diligence, transaction structuring and financing – working closely with management on key value creation initiatives for his investments as well as serving on boards such as Safway Group Holdings and One Call Care Management.

Achievement and Honors

Thomas was an extraordinary son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who left a legacy of kindness and compassion that will continue for years to come.

Tufts University’s Economics program gave him the opportunity to spend one semester in Greece studying archaeology, classical studies, modern Greek language and European history. Additionally he was part of Tufts sailing team while also working summers for Atlas Miniwarehouses L.L.C and Iowa Packaging.

He leaves behind his wife Emily; daughters Eliza and Maisie; parents Jamie and Nancy; sister Whitney Zanios Bishop and brother Parker Zanios as well as Sherry Becker and Tim Becker who served as his sisters-in-law; nieces Willa, Mem Savannah Alaina Otto Gus and Finley as best friends – truly man’s best friend Finley was.

Personal Life

Stomatula “Tula” Ana Karrant Zanios was born prematurely at home in Fort Smith Arkansas almost 99 years ago to John and Ana Karrant. Although doctors initially predicted they would not survive transport to hospital, she and Kula proved resilient enough to thrive thanks to the care of four older siblings who took turns lovingly nurturing and tending for them.

Tula Zanios met Tom Zanios while stationed at Camp Chaffey during World War II and they eventually married and settled in Mason City where Tom owned a produce business. Tula’s warmth will be sorely missed by her son Jamie and Nancy and three “Golden Treasures”, Thomas Eliza Maisie Zanios of Rye NY; Whitney Otto Bishop as well as Willa and Parker Zanios all from Eden Prairie MN.

His love was felt by everyone he came in contact with; from brothers, wives, husbands, fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers alike. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
