Thomas MacVittie, KU’s Newest Quarterback, Has Never Backpedaled From a Challenge

Thomas MacVittie arrived at Kansas as an eager juco transfer, entering an already existing quarterback competition involving Carter Stanley and Miles Kendrick. However, on media day coach Les Miles refused to reveal who would win the starting job.

Tom graduated from Cincinnati’s Archbishop Moeller High School where he served as backup for their state championship team.

Early Life and Education

Thomas MacVittie was an impressive quarterback at Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller High School before leaving to redshirt and play special teams at Pittsburgh before transferring to Mesa Community College in Arizona.

Persistence paid off. Les Miles made an effort to recruit MacVittie once he became coach at Kansas, and the junior-college transfer eventually committed.

As soon as he committed, however, his attitude was put through the paces when Chip Lindsey decided to become head coach at Troy a mere month later. Instead of derailing his plans altogether, this event only reinforced their confidence – the Jayhawks are counting on him to provide stability at quarterback for them and help to stop the constant quarterback turnover they currently experience.

Professional Career

MacVittie stands 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, making him easy to spot at Kansas University football practices. He boasts the body type typical for quarterbacks while remaining comfortable sitting in the pocket to take in what his defense might offer him.

Cincinnati native Jacob Fry had an outstanding freshman college season. In only 1164 yards thrown and 16 touchdowns, Fry earned 247Sports’ No.1 Pro-style quarterback ranking.

MacVittie anticipated an opportunity for himself after Max Browne got injured against Syracuse and Ben DiNucci was barely serviceable as his replacement, yet after this game was benched and only received special teams playing time until 2017. That allowed him to transfer to Mesa Community College as his starting position was no longer relevant.

Thomas MacVittie is an award-winning scientist. He has published 184 peer-reviewed articles across various journals and conference proceedings; as well as contributing to books and chapters. Thomas specializes in radiation biology and experimental hematology.

MacVittie excelled as an All-Greater Catholic League quarterback at Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He amassed 1,896 yards and 22 touchdowns his senior season en route to earning All-Greater Catholic League recognition. A natural leader with an exceptional arm who knows exactly where open teammates were located on the field.

Three-star recruit out of high school, he initially signed with Pitt before transferring to Mesa Community College and eventually committing to Kansas for 2019. Now Les Miles has taken over coaching KU has officially secured its first quarterback commitment under Miles as coach!

Personal Life

Thomas MacVittie has always shown unflinching determination when faced with challenges. From competing as a redshirt freshman at Pitt, to becoming the starting quarterback at Kansas under Les Miles and competing for playing time in Big 12, MacVittie has proven himself tenacious in his pursuit of success. At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds he displays unwavering commitment in pursuit of victory.

Cincinnati native Mark McClain attended Archbishop Moeller High School, an all-boys Catholic institution known for athletic achievement. At an Ohio State camp he ran a 40-yard dash and impressed coaches.

MacVittie became one of Jim Chaney’s main targets after Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi hired Jim as offensive coordinator, but never made a start and was eventually replaced by Max Browne and Shawn Watson. Following this, MacVittie transferred to Mesa Community College under Ryan Felker as head coach/OC.
