Early Life and Education

Steven Olguin hails from a union family – her parents both belong to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters while her grandmother belongs to United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) as well as various uncles and aunts working in different industries.

She became fascinated with science after taking an advanced placement biology course at Smidt Tech – one of few such offerings – and hopes to be the first in her family to complete college studies.

Professional Career

Olguin spent most of her youth toiling in the fields in Caruthers. Yet hard work did not equate to prosperity – she did not understand that higher education could offer any potential exit from this poverty cycle and her doubts persisted about whether higher education was right for her.

Olguin’s score garnered her several college recruiting letters. She accepted a full ride scholarship at University of Toledo but spent her summer collecting cans to afford her bus ticket.

Olguin has since grown Bitwise into a multimillion-dollar enterprise, including writing software, teaching kids how to code, revitalizing downtown Fresno and collecting awards for her advocacy of expanding high-tech opportunities – earning awards along the way as well as serving as a role model for other women working in technology. Bitwise currently bears a distress rating listed in recent stock market filings.

Achievement and Honors

He is the recipient of two scholarships from UTEP: Presidential Excellence Scholarship and BUILDing Scholars Scholarship. Additionally, he was accepted into University Honors program and participated in research with Professors Rajendra Zope and Jorge Lopez to explore electronic properties of molecules and thermodynamics of nuclear matter respectively.

As well as his academic pursuits, he has also participated in volunteering activities at local schools, shadowed dentists and doctors, coached two soccer teams and has an interest in sports and music. Furthermore, he served on Student Council and competed in Health Occupations Students of America competition.

At Fall Commencement, he will serve as banner bearer for the College of Science and plans to pursue either nuclear or condensed matter physics as his PhD research field.

Steven Olguin is a Los Angeles-based union-side labor and employment law attorney. As founding partner of Holguin & Garfield APLC, his firm represents labor and management in complex high-stakes matters. Additionally, Steven has extensive experience with all aspects of labor and employment law.

He is married to Lynn, has two cocker spaniel girls Shelby and Coco as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
