Steven Gilliam is a licensed general contractor in Georgia with a Bachelor’s of Finance and holds certifications including NPDES and OSHA 10 Hour training. He takes great pride in helping clients build their dream homes using his extensive industry knowledge.
Gilliam purchased a single-story tan house in Cave Creek with hopes that it would serve as his retirement home, however his health began deteriorating and eventually a doctor diagnosed Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disease in which one’s immune system attacks one’s nervous system, leading him to plasma therapy for treatment.
Gilliam employs his abilities as both a printmaker and watercolorist in this constructed piece, along with his technique of soaking washi paper in paints to achieve an almost stained effect. This approach recalls his time spent at Washington Color School and his admiration of Northern Renaissance artists like Rembrandt and Jacopo Tintoretto.
Professional Career
After an impressive career as a home builder, Steven Gilliam transitioned into nonprofit sector and consulted on program evaluation and policy development. He served as director of research and evaluation at Homewood Children’s Village; worked at RAND Corporation; as well as conducting nationally funded community based participatory research projects.
At another large firm, he served as a patent attorney, performing various complex patent preparation and prosecution tasks as well as conducting product investigations related to computer technologies such as cybersecurity, processor architectures and distributed systems. Gilliam also served as a volunteer football coach at Pearl High School in Nashville, where he met Gentry. Once Gilliam moved on to Tennessee State, they remained close.
Gilliam made notable contributions to Oregon by helping draft its minimum wage law and instrumental in defeating Measure 97 – an attempt by public employee unions to raise sales tax to fund lavish salaries – by convincing voters against it. Furthermore, he was an outspoken proponent for free enterprise and gun rights.

His uncompromising style gained both admirers and detractors in Salem. According to friends, most of his father’s money has been spent, possibly leaving him declarable indigent soon. Still hopeful for a comeback? Marini regularly visits him and has noticed him “looking better,” with hopes that she can bring him back as an advocate for cannabis industry in Oregon.
