Steven Betts, Managing Director of Development for Holualoa Companies

Steven Betts is a businessman and community leader. He founded a sober men’s recovery weekend and has addressed LGBTQ issues across California, Washington, Idaho and Texas. Additionally, Steven has held leadership roles at Carla & Silky’s Imperial Court as well as Camp Crystal Clear West.

Early Life and Education

His mother instilled in him an appreciation of the land, along with all of the hard work it required, teaching him an empathic mindset which he now brings into his job of providing health care solutions that meet customer needs.

He earned a master’s degree in linguistics before embarking on his PhD program. But soon realized it wasn’t quite his calling, so switched his attention towards religious studies instead.

Betts’ dissertation research included gathering data regarding 700 ministers’ beliefs regarding “God as loving Father, Friend and Protector” as perceived by them and its effect on education (1909). As part of his effort to further his professional growth and enhance coursework, Betts also created the podcast Scholars and Saints with UVA Mormon Studies scholars called Scholars and Saints which allowed him to hone technical skills while augmenting coursework.

Professional Career

Betts is also involved with Valley Partnership and Greater Phoenix Leadership boards as a board member and honorary base commander at Luke Air Force Base. He has extensive experience developing master planned communities, commercial office spaces, industrial plants and mixed use urban projects throughout metropolitan Phoenix.

At Adelaide Crows’ Sir Douglas Nicholls Indigenous Round match in 2017, he met Essendon player Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti before scoring two goals to lead them to a 100-point victory. Since playing 350 games and scoring 642 goals.

He has experience conducting surveys related to protected species, riverine and stillwater ecology, fisheries and habitat assessment. Additionally, he holds European Protected Species licences for bats and great crested newts and has conducted multiple Environmental Impact Assessment and Habitats Regulation Assessments as well as appearing at Public Inquiry hearings and Planning Appeal proceedings.

Achievement and Honors

Betts has long been at the forefront of Colorado’s cultural arts scene and social conscience. He has developed numerous programs for History Colorado and Curious Theatre Company to facilitate community conversations around challenging issues. Just in 2019 alone, he organized Destination Freedom, Black Radio Days, and school production of Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew play about workers at a failing auto plant.

David W. Cline served as past Chairman of the Urban Land Institute-Arizona District Council and current Trustee of The Nature Conservancy in Arizona. Additionally, he serves on Teach for America Phoenix Board and TFA National Council and received 1989 and 1998 Planning Recognition Awards from Arizona Planning Association. In addition, he currently sits on St Thomas Academy Foundation Board.

Personal Life

Steve Betts currently resides in Phoenix with his wife Yvonne and four rescue dogs in central Phoenix. Additionally, he serves on the Arizona Community Foundation Board of Directors.

Betts has proven himself an exceptional entrepreneur in his personal life as well, successfully starting several cannabis-related ventures. He co-founded Pacific Northwest Garden Supply Ltd – retail stores that specialize in high-quality craft growers – while serving on their board.

He currently sits on ASU’s Enterprise Partners and Foundation Board to assist the University with strategic real estate acquisition and development decisions. Furthermore, he serves as former Chairman and current Trustee for Nature Conservancy as well as serving on their Arizona Board. In addition, he chaired ULI Arizona District Council before its Advisory Board was created as well as Vice-Chairing the Arizona Town Hall event.

Steven Betts is an experienced real estate developer. As the Managing Director of Development for Holualoa Companies – an established real estate investment and development firm with commercial properties located throughout Phoenix and Tucson -, Steven oversees their impressive development portfolio.

He previously served as the President and CEO of SunCor Development Company, an ownership and management entity which owned and managed master planned communities throughout the Mountain West as well as large-scale office, industrial, retail and mixed-use urban projects in metropolitan Phoenix. Additionally, he held partnership at Gallagher and Kennedy law firm where he spearheaded their land use/governmental affairs practice group.

He is also an active member of the Church of England; in 2012 he was appointed Archdeacon of Norfolk. Additionally, Betts Real Estate Advisors’s founder/President provides counsel to Concord Wilshire Capital who are currently developing Metrocenter Mall as a redeveloper.
