Steven Almo
Steven Almo
Steven Almo, a professor of biochemistry and physiology and biophysics from Einstein’s Department of Biological Science. As part of his position at Wollowick Family Foundation Chair for Multiple Sclerosis and Immunology he oversees Einstein’s Macromolecular Therapeutics Development Facility where he studies how proteins shape and structures impact their functions; including how to activate, impede or disable immune systems.
Early Life and Education
Steven Almo is a professor of biochemistry and physiology and Wollowick Family Foundation Chair in Multiple Sclerosis and Immunology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His specialty lies in protein structure and function research using high-resolution X-ray crystallography to study their folding. To do so, X-rays are shot through purified protein crystals while measuring their intensity and angle of diffraction and creating 3-D models of individual molecules using this process.
His work is aiding researchers in understanding the molecular mechanisms that control immune system activation, acceleration and inhibition – an essential step towards creating new immunotherapy strategies and compounds to treat autoimmune diseases, cancers and infections.
He is also co-founder and Chairman of Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board for Cue Biopharma Inc.
Professional Career
Steven Almo’s professional career encompasses a broad spectrum of areas. His research encompasses Crystal Structure, Biochemistry and Protein structure as well as topics such as Purine Nucleoside Phosphatase and Sinorhizobium Meliloti.
His work employs X-ray crystallography to determine the shapes and structures of proteins, providing insight into their workings and potential improvements. He has published over 300 papers; currently serves as chair and professor in biochemistry physiology & biophysics department of Albert Einstein College of Medicine; holds Wollowick Family Foundation Chair for Multiple Sclerosis Immunology Research as well as Director of Macromolecular Therapeutic Development Facility within this institution;
He has served on various committees such as Sue Golding Graduate Admissions Committee, Molecular Biophysics Training Grant Steering Committee and faculty promotion and tenure committees. Furthermore, he is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as being honored with numerous awards for his scientific contributions.
Achievement and Honors
Steven Almo is an internationally acclaimed scientist renowned for his research in X-ray crystallography to determine protein shapes and structures. This area of his study helps scientists gain an insight into how immune cell ignition, accelerator and brake functions can be altered to fight cancer or autoimmune disease.
Almo serves as chair of biochemistry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and professor of physiology & biophysics. Additionally, he holds the Wollowick Family Foundation Chair in Multiple Sclerosis and Immunology while leading their Macromolecular Therapeutics Development Facility at university.
Almo’s lab has long been on the cutting-edge of high-throughput methods for protein expression, structure determination and functional annotation. His contributions to structural biology have earned him many accolades and awards.
Personal Life
At home in Bronx, New York he enjoys golf, cycling and hiking in his free time, along with spending time with his wife and two children. His research on protein structures is revolutionizing drug discovery by showing how an immune cell’s ignition, accelerator and brakes can be controlled to fight autoimmune diseases, cancers and infectious disease; and expanding our understanding of global nutrient cycles. He holds both an Albert Einstein College of Medicine Professorship as well as being Chair for Multiple Sclerosis Immunology by Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair Wollowick Family Foundation Chair at Albert Einstein College of Medicine as well as co-founder & chairman Scientific & Clinical Advisory Board at Cue Biopharma Inc.
