Steve Workman – A Lifelong Supporter of Grand Valley State University

Words cannot express how deeply Steve was loved and will be missed. He made such an impactful difference in so many lives during his long and eventful life.

Workman was found guilty of murder and abuse of a corpse without trial by judge alone and was sentenced to sixty-five years of incarceration.

Early Life and Education

Steven Workman was a passionate father and husband who believed strongly in giving back to his community through helping others. He saw education as being essential and was delighted that many members of his family graduated from Grand Valley State University.

“He worked at Dean and DeLuca specialty food store where he liberated cheese from its refrigeration case for an exciting sensory experience. Additionally, he served his community as both a volunteer firefighter and church member.”

At his police interrogation, he confessed to shooting his ex-wife Lesia and mistreating her corpse. After waiving jury trial rights and opting instead for bench trial convictions on murder and abuse of corpse charges, he now appeals his convictions on grounds that the trial court erred by denying his motion for directed verdict and considering abuse of corpse as aggravating circumstances for an increased murder sentence.

Professional Career

Steven Workman is an esteemed civil engineer in Florida and has contributed significantly to several key projects in recent years. These include an environmental impact study for reconstruction of 43 miles of Interstate 4 in Orlando metropolitan area as well as development, evaluation and implementation of SunRail commuter rail system in the region.

He has established an endowment fund to support women civil engineering students in Indiana, and is an active member of both ASCE and SMPS.

James “Jimmy” Hosford was an enthusiastic supporter of Grand Valley State University and helped establish its Hosford Family Excellence in Academics and Athletics Fellowship to remember him. Additionally, he serves as partner in Filter and Coating Technology Company which offers products for indoor air quality improvement as well as product finishing needs.

Achievement and Honors

Filter and Coating Technology’s Filter Workman is dedicated to meeting customers’ product finishing and indoor air pollution solutions needs, while serving on various community boards and providing support for Grand Valley State University. He and his wife Kim established the Hosford Family Excellence in Academics & Athletics Scholarship which honors their late son while providing graduate athletes the resources to continue their studies at GVSU.

He is committed to lifelong learning and remains current on all the latest advances in dentistry, completing many continuing education courses to hone his craft. A member of both the American Dental Association and Illinois State Dental Society, Lynda and Dan are proud parents to Savannah and Hailey who attend her practices respectively.

Personal Life

As a hobby, he enjoys golf and spending time with his family. Additionally, he’s an avid follower of the Houston Astros, caddying multiple times for Brad Elder and Jonas Bjerregaard during their baseball games.

He is a published author and has worked as a physiotherapist for 20 years, attending numerous external courses to hone his craft and earning certification in acupuncture.

Workman was found guilty of murder and abuse of corpse after a bench trial and sentenced to 65 years. On appeal, he raises two issues that he believes the trial court erred on in its ruling: improper denial of his motion for directed verdict as well as other errors during his trial.

Net Worth

Workman is estimated to have an estimated net worth of $400 Million. His real estate holdings significantly bolster this amount.

Workman realized during his time as a dentist that there needed to be an easier way for dentists to balance both clinical and business aspects of their practices, leading him to create Heartland Dental, which now provides support services to dentists across 37 states.

Workman Success Systems assists businesses with marketing, accounting and human resources needs as well as dental insurance and group practice management platform needs. In addition, Workman speaks at conferences about building successful businesses – and holds certification with National Speakers Association’s Certified Speaking Professional program – while at the same time coaching real estate teams directly through Workman Success Systems.
