Net Worth

A person’s net worth can be defined as the sum total of all their assets minus liabilities, such as cash, retirement accounts, investment accounts, cars and homes. Liabilities could include debt from credit cards, student loans or mortgages – giving a more accurate depiction of financial health than simply looking at income alone.

To calculate your net worth, start by listing all of your assets – such as home and car values – that make up your assets portfolio. Next, list your liabilities; this should include mortgage payments, auto loans and any other debts owed. Finally, subtract liabilities from assets to calculate your net worth. A positive number means your assets outweigh debts giving you financial cushion in case of emergencies.
