As a teenager, Lavey decided to drop out of high school to explore more meaningful pursuits. Reportedly he worked as a cage boy and lion tamer performing dangerous stunts with big cats before turning to organ music as his source of support in nightclubs.

Lavey amassed a following and established the Church of Satan on April 30, 1966 – to coincide with Walpurgisnacht, an ancient Christian festival celebrating witchcraft. He chose this date so his headquarters, known as The Black House, could host rituals frequently attended by scantily clad women.

Press distortion and harassment from the public forced Lavey’s organization underground, though he occasionally surfaced to spread his message. He made appearances on numerous talk shows as well as publishing books such as Satan Speaks!, The Satanic Bible and Satanic Rituals.
