Steve Eckstein – Former Judge of Crawford County Probate-Juvenile Court

Eckstein is a cellist with the Utah Symphony and an instructor at the University of Utah. Additionally, he performs in numerous concert series throughout each year.

Ernestine Delois Eppenger, commonly known by her moniker Eckstein, began her activism while attending Indiana University as a black student. Ultimately becoming a member and officer in the NAACP.

Early Life and Education

Eckstein was raised in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota where he spent his summers swimming and fishing. Family was important to him and he enjoyed tinkering with mechanical things as well as collecting coins, stamps, Tonka trucks and gardening. Additionally he participated in community projects such as city flower planting and socializing with people on Main Street.

He joined Earl Hines’ Grand Terrace Orchestra in 1939 and stayed with them until 1943, after which time he formed his own band and pioneered bebop music.

He was an active member of Sunnyvale First Baptist Church and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Warriors support group. He loved bass fishing with his grandchildren. Additionally, he was known to be an outstanding family man devoted to his wife and children who grieved his passing.

Professional Career

Eckstein serves as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Virginia Tech men’s golf, having enjoyed considerable success both academically and on the links.

Since joining Virginia Tech, he has helped the program move up 35 spots in national rankings while recruiting multiple top-100 players.

At the same time as his baseball career, he has also been practicing pharmacy for over 20 years. Currently he owns two locations of Mt. Welcome Pharmacy: one near Seaside Grocery in Christiansted and another in Princesse near Doctor Prasad’s Medical Clinic in Princesse. In addition to these responsibilities, he serves on both local associations’ boards as president of Virginia Pharmacists Association; furthermore he enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Achievement and Honors

He served on numerous committees and task forces of the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health, was an inaugural member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and has received many honors and awards, such as being named Established Investigator by the American Heart Association.

Eckstein was an accomplished cellist who appeared on numerous television variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show, Nat King Cole Show and Merv Griffin Show. An avid bass fisherman himself and loved taking his grandsons bobber fishing for fun he was also an active member of Calvary United Church of Christ in Crestline before losing his wife Judy in 2012. Now living in Merrick New York his hobbies include reading and watching shows like Family Guy and Lord of the Rings on television.

Personal Life

Judge Steven Eckstein will be remembered fondly as an integral member of Crawford County Probate-Juvenile Court and as an avid bass fisher. He loved taking his grandsons bobber fishing, was active at Calvary United Church of Christ Crestline and leaves twin daughters Anastasia and Andrea; 8 grandchildren (Skyler, Conner Tanner Rylan Kaitlyn Brayden Owen Madison); sister Debra Henry of Mike Henry as well as niece Cortney Strassell Moyer as his closest relatives among many other family members he leaves behind his sister Debra as his last living family member before passing away from cancer on December 15, 2012.

Soho Eckstein is one of Kentridge’s many fictional and real characters in his works; both invented and drawn from those he knows personally, the two identities blurring seamlessly like images he creates on screen; these images are dirty, unpleasant and disgraceful to say the least.
