As soon as he could, Austria-born oliver hsu began studying cello and piano from age five, winning awards on both instruments at the national “Jugend Musiziert” youth competition. While studying computer science and music at Swarthmore College – winning both scholarships – he performed Dvorak Cello Concerto alongside its orchestra!
Early Life and Education
Oliver Hsu is a sophomore at Chinese International School and enjoys playing tennis and writing for his school magazine. Additionally, he participates in both jazz band and orchestra as well as various student-led service groups. Oliver loves music and exploring new songs with great joy while endurance sports are his specialty – they say the best views come with hard climbs!
Clarissa Hsu, a medical anthropologist with Kaiser Permanente, studies the social and cultural facets of health care. Her primary work focus is helping chronic pain patients withdraw from opioids and find alternatives. In addition, Clarissa strives to enhance how health systems interact with patients and families regarding sensitive topics like dementia diagnoses, antipsychotic medication usage and blood pressure screenings.
Professional Career
Oliver began playing cello at age 5, then piano at 10. Winning awards in Austria’s national “Jugend Musiziert” youth competition, Oliver earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Swarthmore College with majors in Computer Science as well as Cello Performance and Music Theory respectively.
He has published over 80 scientific papers, participated in five deep-sea drilling expeditions and traveled to more than 80 countries for Earth Science research. His book on the Messinian salinity crisis became one of the best-selling titles in History of Science.
He holds 16 patents in mining, oil, water and energy technology. Additionally, he serves on Andreessen Horowitz’s American Dynamism investing team with a focus on companies that advance core civic industries. Prior to that he held product, operations and strategy roles at Mos – a consumer fintech that caters specifically for student financial health – Andela and Aura.
Achievement and Honors
Abbey Hsu earned Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week honors after scoring 31 career points against Harvard on Saturday for Columbia in its 89-64 win. Hsu led Columbia both in scoring and 3-point shooting (6-9 from distance). She led Columbia in both categories.

Personal Life
Oliver Hsu is actively engaged with his local community. As a member of the Taiwanese American Association of New York City and a passionate soccer player, Oliver also enjoys billiards, tennis and music – among many other activities!
His writing has taken an intimate form that draws from relationships between pop ephemera and personal narratives. Recent pieces in The New Yorker highlight this approach, such as an interview with a Ukrainian man selling off his records and instruments on eBay during their city’s bombing.
Hsu is currently working as a partner at Andreessen Horowitz as part of the American Dynamism investing team, where his focus lies in companies that advance core civic industries such as education and housing. Furthermore, he serves on the board for Chelsea Symphony and plays chamber music professionally.
