Newnan’s leading citizens invested in the railroad, and as a result the town flourished. Unfortunately, Newnan experienced setbacks during the 1920s due to boll weevil infestation and Great Depression conditions in Coweta County farms; however, its fortunes quickly rebounded following World War II.

Aundie Kiser, mother to Christian and Melody, introduced them to music from an early age. Together they began playing together, eventually forming their own band.

Early Life and Education

Newnan flourished during the late 1800s due to a combination of factors including its railroad service, paved streets, and electric power. New businesses opened including cotton warehouses such as R. D. Cole Manufacturing; schools were built; even a college was founded!

In 1998, Newnan-Coweta County and Ayr-South Ayrshire Scotland signed a Sister City/Sister County pact in order to strengthen ties between both areas in terms of education, culture, tourism and economic development. Every summer since 1998, Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra from Scotland has visited Newnan; city residents welcome them as visiting musicians from Scotland.

Students participating in band classes and extra-curricular ensembles such as concert band, small chamber ensembles, marching band, winter guard or the percussion ensemble receive a chevron each semester they take part. Senior students meeting certain criteria also earn honor cords.

Professional Career

Newnan’s community bands offer free concerts for all ages and backgrounds during the summer. Performances feature contemporary artists, jazz ensembles, mariachi groups, as well as performers who can tailor their performance specifically to your event needs.

Coweta Community Foundation oversees relief efforts following a spring tornado. Featuring Alan Jackson’s “Good Time”, this event raised over $100,000 for local families affected by this devastating natural disaster.

Heard and Griffith met while performing with UGA’s Red Coat Marching Band, and have become life-long friends through it. Now bridesmaids for one another’s weddings, they work closely together on district honor bands and Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE), sharing an unwavering passion for teaching that places student first.

Achievement and Honors

Newnan Band members have the opportunity to earn achievement and honor cords through hard work. Senior band members achieving these awards must have completed four semesters of band class, two years of marching band, earned one chevron for band, completed 5 additional music service hours, been in good standing with no balance due on their student account, minimum NHS discipline issues and two teacher recommendation forms completed successfully.

Sweetbay from Newnan won this year’s Battle of the Bands competition held in downtown LaGrange and attended by various bands like Steroid Summer, Gossamer and Gullah – who all competed with each band being judged based on stage presence, musicianship and audience applause.

Personal Life

Newnan Band is a family-friendly music series hosted by the City of Newnan’s Main Street Park and featuring artists of various genres including blues, jazz and country. Bring a blanket, beverages and snacks along with dancing shoes for this free event taking place every third Friday of summer.
