Mike Brey is an American college basketball coach. Since 2000, he has led Notre Dame to 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament under his tutelage.
He began coaching at DeMatha Catholic High School in Bethesda, Maryland in 1982 before transitioning into working as an assistant coach at Duke University from 1987-1995.
Early Life and Education
Mike Brey comes from a sports-loving family. His mother won second-place medal at the Olympic Swimming Competitions for 100-meter Butterfly event. Mike himself grew up in Bethesda, Maryland where his high school basketball team boasted a 55-9 record before going onto Northwestern State University and then George Washington University to further his studies in basketball.
In 1987, Brey returned to his former high school as an assistant coach under Morgan Wootten. Five years later at University of Delaware – his first head coaching position – Brey led his Fightin’ Blue Hens to a 99-51 record over five seasons, which included two America East Conference championships and two trips to NCAA Tournament play-offs.
Brey and Tish have one daughter named Callie who plays volleyball for the Colonials. Tish operates a successful online clothing business as well as being an accomplished photographer.
Brey grew up in Bethesda, Maryland where he played basketball at DeMatha High School under legendary coach Morgan Wootten before going on to graduate from George Washington University with a degree in physical education and embark on his coaching career at his alma mater as well as working on Mike Krzyzewski’s bench for eight seasons at Duke.
From 1995 to 2000, he also served as head coach of University of Delaware basketball team, amassing an impressive 99-52 record during this time and helping several of his players enter the NBA.
He currently serves as head coach of Notre Dame men’s basketball, having taken over in 2000. Since his arrival, the Fighting Irish have reached nine NCAA Tournament appearances under his tutelage.
Achievement and Honors
Mike Brey has achieved great success as the head coach of Notre Dame. Under his tutelage, they have made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and two Elite Eight appearances.
Mr. Martin serves on the National Advisory Board for the Positive Coaching Alliance and on Coaches vs. Cancer National Council; helping raise over $2 Million for this cause.
Brey was honored with induction into both George Washington University and University of Delaware Halls of Fame. As head coach from 1995 to 2000 at Delaware he led them to two NCAA Tournament berths before Notre Dame hired him.
Brey’s wife Tish owns and operates an extremely successful online clothing business featuring various dress items; in addition, she is also an accomplished photographer. They have three children together: Kyle, Callie and Michael.
Mike Brey met Tish while playing basketball at George Washington. Together they have two children — Kyle and Callie — as well as one granddaughter. Tish runs an online clothing business as well as being a photographer.

His spouse Tish runs her own successful online clothing boutique that sells items such as veils, scarves, and packs. Additionally, she runs a photography website.
Mike Brey and Callie Brey are living together in Maryland with Mike’s daughter Callie playing school volleyball.
Recent months have seen Mike Brey join the Atlanta Hawks coaching staff as an assistant coach, replacing Nate McMillan after they fired him midseason. Brey will work alongside head coach Quin Snyder whom he helped train while at Duke in the 1980s; their relationship hasn’t seen an opportunity to fully blossom until now, 23 seasons since Brey left Notre Dame!
