Net Worth
john shoup, who served as the president and CEO of Washington’s behemoth wine company Stimson Lane (now Ste. Michelle Wine Estates) from 1983 to 2000, had a lot of leverage as the 800-pound gorilla of Washington’s wine industry. He pushed for the establishment of the vast Columbia Valley appellation and helped launch the Washington Wine Commission.
After retiring in 2000, he launched his own wine project called Long Shadows Vintners. The venture combines winemaking talents from around the world, with partners including Australia’s Penfold icon John Duval; Italy’s Diel; Napa’s Randy Dunn and cult Cabernet producer Agustin Huneeus Sr.; and France’s Michel Rolland. The result is a collection of micro-sized wineries making intense, individualistic wines. It’s an approach that’s a departure for the former CEO, but it’s also the latest move in a 50-year chess game.
