A Place Called School, which he wrote during his four-year study of schools, was named Outstanding Book of the Year by the American Educational Research Association. And he also helped shape data-based improvements in numerous areas of education.
Personal Life
John Portin Junior was born in 1891. His father, Henry, was a newspaper reporter in Seattle, Washington. He was one of the first news cameramen in Seattle. In 1940, he was 49 years old. He married Marjorie Zilkey in 1995. They raised their family in faith. During their marriage, they supported each other in many ways. The two were honored with Mr. and Mrs. Eagle community service awards in 1984.
After his wife’s death, John moved to Windham, Connecticut. In 1940, he had two sons. One was Bradley, who lives in Coupeville, Washington, and the other was Ron. Both are still living in the area. Today, he has a daughter, Susan Portin DePalma. Other family members include his granddaughter, Pamela Lerner Portin. Pamela was a scholarship student at Montclair State University, where she taught swimming at the YMCA. She also worked as a secretary for the Student Government Association.
