John McCorkle

McCorkle was a scientist, engineer, mathematician, organizer, pilot, teacher and leader. His career spanned 52 years.

McCorkle fought in the Vietnam War and returned home. Many of the banners welcoming him back were in protest of the war he had been fighting.

Early Life and Education

McCorkle was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania near Harris’s Ferry (now Harrisburg), the son of Alexander and Agness Margaret Montgomery McCorkle. Both his parents were Scottish Presbyterians who migrated to the area during the wave of Scotch-Irish migration in the early 18th century.

He went to David Caldwell’s academy in Greensboro and then graduated from the College of New Jersey. He later returned to Salisbury and founded his own school, Zion-Parnassus Academy.

He was a moderate Calvinist who believed that religious education could foster diligence, happiness, and piety. McCorkle worked to bridge the Old Side-New Side Controversy within the Presbyterian Church in colonial America. He also supported the establishment of a state-supported university in North Carolina. He wrote the first university by-laws and chaired the curriculum committee. He delivered the address at the laying of the cornerstone in 1793.

Professional Career

John McCorkle’s professional career has centered around nursing. He has worked as a staff nurse, nursing instructor and researcher. He has received a certificate of completion in psychiatric and oncology nursing, as well as a master’s and doctorate in nursing.

He is a member of the American Nurses Association and was a charter member and board member of the Oncology Nursing Society. He has also been a recipient of a National Cancer Institute, Institutional Research Training Grant.

Alicia Lecceardone, associate dean of academic programs, diversity, equity and inclusion, received a 2022 Chancellor’s Creating Community Award for excellence in integrating diversity and inclusiveness into her administrative role.

Personal Life

John McCorkle was a farmer of Southern sympathies, who served in the pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard during the outbreak of the American Civil War. He later joined the guerrillas led by Partisan Confederate Ranger William Clarke Quantrill and was present at several raids, including the massacre at Lawrence, Kansas in 1863.

He wrote about his experiences in Three Years with Quantrill, which was first published in 1914. In it he demonstrates how federal atrocities influenced him to take up the cause of the Confederacy.

His life was also shaped by his own family traditions and the lessons of humility and honesty he learned from his paternal grandfather. These lessons helped him to build his successful nursery business in Dearing, Georgia. Known as “Papa,” he passed his business wisdom on to his son Skeetter.
