He was married to Sarah E. Hill and she gave him three children.

They moved to Kansas in 1876, but came back to Shenango Township in 1880. He engaged in farming, dairying and stock raising.

He was a member of the Republican party and held many important offices in government. He served as county auditor, school director and township assessor.

Professional Career

John Houk has worked in the field of disc golf for more than 30 years. He has been designing courses and running tournaments since the early 1980s.

He is also the creator of the PDGA Amateur World Doubles Championships, which has been held annually for 16 years. He has designed over 180 courses and consulted on others throughout his career.

In addition to his work in the disc golf industry, John has a deep interest in photography and has a unique artistic methodology that uses still-life vignettes to make layered compositions. This technique reflects his professional experience as a computer programmer and mirrors the algorithmic nature of his creative process. He has also worked with a number of local, national and international non-profits to promote disc golf worldwide.

Achievements and Honors

John Houk is a world-renowned theoretical and computational organic chemist, with a research group that solves complex problems in chemistry using computer modeling. Their discoveries have led to new reagents, catalysts and drugs.

His achievements have earned him many honors. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

He has also been elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), one of China’s most distinguished academic institutions. In addition, he has received numerous awards from the American Chemical Society (ACS) and other organizations. Currently, his research focuses on the use of computational tools to understand reactivity in organic chemistry. He is an authority on the development of rules for reactivity, the use of computational methods to predict the reactivity of new molecules and the design of enzyme-catalyzed reactions.

Personal Life

John Houk’s life was a blend of family, sports, and politics. He was a self-educated lawyer who fought for the Union cause in Tennessee.

After the Civil War, he served as a Congressman from Tennessee’s Second District. He consolidated his political power inside his own district and became the most important member of the Republican Party in Tennessee.

He also cultivated a close alliance with Tennessee Democrats who craved appointments from the federal government. This arrangement caused some controversy among other Republicans.
