John Hnat was born on July 8, 1920 and is an American lawyer specializing in employment law and civil litigation. He was admitted to the bar in 1994.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Reserve University and a law degree from the University of Cincinnati, as well as a master’s degree from Ohio State University.

John was active in church and community activities throughout his early life, as well as serving in the United States Army where he earned a silver medal for service during World War II. Additionally, he belonged to Youngstown Greek Catholic Union Lodge No. 164 and Slovak Catholic Sokols Wreath No. 32; sadly he is survived by Eleanor, his beloved wife of 62 years. John Hnat was an incredibly passionate and dedicated man, who loved his family, friends, and the outdoors. His interests included backcountry skiing, mountain and desert hiking, birdwatching, painting and music. Additionally he was very involved in his community; co-owning Snake River Music with lifelong friend Chuck Spray while driving a START bus for charity.

He had a deep religious conviction. He was an active parishioner at St. Bridget School and Church, as well as running Hnat’s Grocery Store in Gary. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Army, earning a medal for action in Germany. Additionally, his positive outlook and devotion to family were unwavering; his two daughters Annmarie Jones and Susan Hnat are survivors along with his mother and brother Robert Feeley.
