Early Life and Education

When John Harke was a youngster, he dreamed of playing for the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. The Kearny, New Jersey native has since made a name for himself in the field of faith. With Passion Ministries, he travels the country and the world to help bring restoration and hope to the body of Christ.

He and fellow molecular magnapeht aficionado Bill Cregg were awarded the state Senate’s Liberty Award for a pair of acts that stood out above the rest. Among them, the most impressive was helping save a life. Using the latest in smart technology, Cregg and Harke were able to track down a carjacker and rescued a 10-year-old girl. It also took a lot of luck, and a hefty dose of God’s grace.

From a star player at every level to professional assistant coach, television analyst, radio host and travel soccer dad, John Harkes has worn a multitude of hats in the world of American soccer. He currently headlines a weekly drivetime SiriusXM show called “CounterAttack” with his old teammate Tony Meola, calls matches on a part-time basis for beIN SPORT and supports his son Ian and daughters Lauren and Lily as they navigate their own soccer lives.

After playing college soccer at the University of Virginia, he joined English League club Sheffield Wednesday in 1990 and became the first American to play at the top level of the sport in England. He also scored the first goal scored by an American in a major English final at Wembley Stadium.

Harke earned nine letters in four sports at Stout, and was a two-time first team all-conference recipient in football. He was also a member of the Blue Devil basketball and track teams. He was team captain twice in football, and twice in basketball.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1961 and a master’s in 1965. He is a junior high school teacher and athletic director in Anoka, Minn.

He has been honored by Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick for his and fellow volunteer William Cregg’s efforts to rescue a 10-year-old girl who was attacked by murder suspect David Renz. The pair received a standing ovation from the crowd at Fitzpatrick’s luncheon. The honor came after the girl’s father wrote a letter of thanks to both men.

He has served in many capacities including Assistant District Superintendent, General Presbyter for the Louisiana District Council and on the Board of Regents of Southwestern Assemblies of God University. He also founded SpiritWind, an organization that endeavors to network denominational leaders and ministry organizations internationally.
