John Denoia is an American director and choreographer best known as the original choreographer of Chippendales dance troupe. Additionally, he won two Emmy Awards for his Unicorn Tales shorts for young audiences.

In the early 1980s, Steve Banerjee hired him to choreograph for his dance club Chippendales. Unfortunately, things started to unravel between them.

Early Life and Education

John Denoia was born in Connecticut, USA and attended Hazleton High School where he played quarterback and guard for the basketball team. As a four-year starter at Scranton University, he earned himself recognition as both an All-American in football and All-State selection in basketball. Drafted by both San Francisco Forty-Niners of the All-American Conference and Washington Redskins of the National Football League, Denoia became first player ever to earn both honors simultaneously.

Professional Career

John Denoia earned a living by choreographing for Chippendales dance club in New York City, creating numerous original dance routines that won him praise from both critics and audiences alike. Additionally, he wrote scripts for two short films – Unicorn Tales which earned him two Emmy Awards; The Great Escape which he directed; however his professional life was cut short in 1987 when Gilbert Rivera Lopez fatally shot him during a shoot-out.

Following denoia’s passing, Banerjee was found guilty of both murder and conspiracy and sentenced to two and half years in prison. Associate Producer Candace Mayeron told Elle Magazine that she’d spoken with denoia just before his passing, with him asking her not to tell anyone about it beforehand.
