Thomas has recently relocated to Orillia from Atlanta in order to assist those in need, such as those living on the street. She finds her community welcoming.

She currently leads a multistate CMMI practice transformation grant covering over 1100 primary care and specialty practitioners in 11 states. Her work aims to enhance patient outcomes and foster person-centric care via interprofessional learning communities.

Early Life and Education

Janet Thomas was born March 9 1953 in Kingston Parish Jamaica to three siblings of which she was the eldest.

She then attended Holy Childhood High School where she excelled academically and attended the University of the West Indies to study psychology and economics.

Her passion for medicine inspired her to pursue a nursing degree, working as a nurse at South Fulton Hospital, Dekalb Medical Center and Emory Medical Center as part of medical surgical units.

She was deeply committed to her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she enjoyed spending time with every day through daily teasing, laughter, tea parties, cartoons and cartoon shows. Additionally, she was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints serving in various roles such as relief society president, primary president, scout coordinator and gospel doctrine teacher.

Professional Career

Janet Thomas brings 25 years of international banking experience. She has played an essential role in transforming market structures and businesses, developing advanced big data analytics that have allowed her to identify and leverage industry trends.

She currently serves as Project Director for New Hampshire Citizens Health Initiative, leading a 4-year tri-state CMMI Practice Transformation grant that has reached over 1100 primary care, specialty, and mental health providers to enhance quality outcomes and enable alternative payment models. In addition, she serves as Collaborator on interprofessional learning programs regionally and nationally.

She serves on the State of Colorado Newborn Screening Program Stakeholders Committee and specializes in lysosomal storage disorders, phenylketonuria and newborn screening. In addition, she acts as Co-Program Director of Mountain States Regional Genetics Network.

Achievement and Honors

Through life’s journey she has sought out memorable people and experiences. Her wit and compassion for others shines brightly; laughing is her favorite pastime with an appreciation for off-color humor being at its core.

She is also an advocate for undergraduate research, mentoring McNair Scholars as they transition into graduate school and follow them along their Ph.D. journeys.

She possesses many talents and has taken on various projects during her lifetime, such as teaching art classes at her local hospital and sign painting. Additionally, she mastered chair caning and cake decoration before attending an evening course in auto body repair. Additionally, she enjoys restoring antiques as well as sewing quilts and Halloween costumes for projects. As founding member of Sustainable Lafayette she won an Individual Award from Sustainable Contra Costa.

Personal Life

Janet Thomas was an active member of her church and community. She served in various capacities at her congregation including Relief Society President, Primary President, Scout Coordinator and Gospel Doctrine Teacher – she also took great pleasure singing with the Ward Choir.
