Jack Pennington has long been revered by area dirt racing fans. In 2006 he was honored by being inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame.

He graduated from Sumrall High School in Mississippi, attended Peru State Teachers College where he played on an All-State Basketball Team, served in WWII, was active with Crestline Police Department and pump station operators and more.

He operated a woodworking business making wood owls and other animals out of wood, loved being a grandfather, and strived to include all his grandchildren in daily life. He was “that parent” at every school event, church program, or youth sports activity he could find himself attending; serendipity guided his path in life as well as those whom he touched along the way.

Professional Career

Pennington earned numerous championships during his racing career. Notably, in 1979 he claimed the National Dirt Late Model championship and numerous Georgia races; his most successful year being 1985 with six victories under his belt.

Pennington serves on the board of directors for a law firm and practices civil trial and insurance litigation, such as commercial/business litigation, general complex litigation, contract and tort claims for business torts as well as debtor/creditor, banking, employment/workers’ compensation, real estate.

His current project is a documentary series on eccentric locals in Winston-Salem. Additionally, he has produced documentary web content for Patheos and other sites; taught various institutions; written books; composed music pieces; as well as being an accomplished musician.

Achievement and Honors

He participated in middle distance running events all around the world, winning numerous medals including four consecutive Australian National Championships titles. Furthermore, his team won gold at both Hanover and Christchurch Marathon World Championships held in 1979.

He’s a four-star recruit in the 2022 class, already receiving offers from virtually every major program nationwide. Additionally, he was honored as first team all conference honoree and played an instrumental part in Mid-Prairie’s state tournament team for 2022.

Pennington has been honored as a Winston-Salem Journal All-Area player and ranks in the top-10 overall prospects list. Ohio State, LSU and Florida State all offer scholarships. He plans to visit Clemson this weekend as well. Pennington’s father served in World War II’s U.S. Army Infantry fighting five major campaigns before being killed during combat duty himself.

Personal Life

Jack lived a fulfilling life surrounded by family, friends and the community. His passions included basketball, fishing and anything Elvis. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Old Dime Box and former school bus driver/youth sports cheerleader; Jack made sure that he was involved with every event, program or sporting activity of his children and grandchildren.

Rob Moroso from Georgia was also a part-time race car driver in the NASCAR Winston Cup series in 1989-1990 with his own budget team racing on tight budget. Rob finished as the runner-up that year.

Even at 85, Jack Pennington remains an active racer who has won multiple awards. Additionally, he is known as a TV host with a strong commitment to charitable efforts, and boasts many endorsements as a spokesperson for various brands.

Ty Pennington recently published his most recent book entitled “Ty’s Tricks: Home Repair Secrets Plus Cheap and Easy Projects to Transform Any Room,” while also teaming up with Sears to launch his Ty Pennington Style brand products such as bedding, tabletop items, bath accessories, furniture and other home decor pieces.
