Henry Asegun Henry

Henry was enthusiastic about structural engineering, and enjoyed sharing his work. Each Friday at noon he would attend an Engineer’s Club luncheon, meeting fellow structural engineers to share information and discuss projects.

He dedicated much of his time and efforts to volunteer activities at the highest levels of engineering profession, which helped advance civil engineering research and education.

Early Life and Education

Henry became an esteemed professional mechanical engineer despite lacking formal education; this success came via on-the-job training and practical experience gained at work. Additionally, Henry helped establish Brooklyn Collegiate & Polytechnic Institute by serving on its inaugural board of trustees.

He expanded engineering and construction capabilities across the US and internationally through partnerships with local firms. One such partnership, PB-Sabbour in Cairo, lasted 20 years under his guidance. Furthermore, he established an advanced technology group at PB and supported employee research initiatives at the company.

He published several books and articles in both popular publications like American Scientist and academic journals like Journal of Franklin Institute of Industrial Technology. Additionally, he made frequent guest appearances on television shows and radio broadcasts before passing away in Durham, North Carolina at age 81.

Unfortunately, Henry passed away May 23, 2001 but his legacy will live on through generations to come.

Personal Life

He was a dedicated father and husband who played an active role in community programs promoting youth achievement. Furthermore, he served as a role model to numerous engineers and students.

He was raised in Prospect, Kentucky and graduated from Speed School with both a BS in Engineering and MS in Computer Science degrees. Following this achievement he worked for various companies before creating his own firm in 1990.

Henry had an enormous influence on electrical engineering. His groundbreaking discovery, 50 years before Edison, that electricity can be generated by moving copper wire inside an electromagnet and inducting another magnet onto it is at the core of modern electricity technology. Electric motors, generators and transformers all operate according to Henry’s principles; his discoveries were honored with membership into both Smithsonian Institution and National Academy of Science as well as prominent government positions including serving as President Lincoln’s science advisor during Civil War times.
