Spanos spent his NFL career working as an assistant coach under some legendary Hall-of-Fame coaches. Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin from Pittsburgh, two-time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins and Dick LeBeau’s tenures as defensive coordinator in both Pittsburgh and Tennessee provided him with invaluable experiences.

At the height of his career, Spanos amassed a fortune through his company A. G. Spanos Companies, which constructed apartment complexes and residential communities.

In addition to his real estate company, he owns the San Diego Chargers NFL team and is one of the biggest sports owners in America.

He made his fortune in the 1950s through real estate investments and building apartment projects for the upper class. Following his success with this endeavor, he decided to pursue his other ambition: owning a professional football team.

In 1984, he purchased 60% of the team and eventually took full control, buying out several minority owners. Today he serves as chairman and president of the Chargers while his son Dean oversees operations and serves as Chairman of the Board.
