Artist and Curator George Preston

George Preston has always been a hard worker and loves to learn. So when he and his wife, Irene, decided to buy Preston’s Candy and Ice Cream in Burlingame three years ago, he was eager for change.

His first task was to figure out how to make his favorite coffee caramels. He also learned how to work a museum-quality, antique caramel cutter, which is used to cut the chocolate-coated candies into squares and package them by hand.

Early Life and Education

Prestons george was born in the city of Harlem, New York. Her parents were avid gardeners, and her childhood was shaped by her mother’s love for the outdoors.

After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, Canada, despite her family’s objections. At the time, women were not encouraged to pursue careers in horticulture.

She quickly became an expert in lily breeding, and her hybrids were considered to be the best in the country. Her work was influential in developing lily varieties that were hardy to cold weather and disease-resistant.

She authored several wide-ranging articles on lily cultivation and published the first book on lily cultivation in Canada, Garden Lilies (1929). Her horticultural work was also influential in the development of the Canadian Lily Society.

Professional Career

prestons george has long been on the art scene as both an artist and curator. He was a generous and philanthropic donor to his chosen charities including The New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution and his alma mater, Columbia University.

Preston has received numerous honors and awards. Currently, he serves as the President and CEO of KMFA 89.5, a classical radio station in Austin, TX.

He is also a senior fellow at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), a nonprofit organization that educates military veterans on how to become successful entrepreneurs. He is also active with many other charitable, religious, and military organizations.

In addition, he received the Monte Cristo Award from the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference for his work developing new works of theater and music. The award honors his tenacity, vision, and willingness to take risks for the sake of art. The O’Neill board chairman, Tom Viertel, lauded Preston’s achievements and noted that the award “means a great deal to all of us.” The O’Neill has since established a scholarship in his name.

In particular, the liberal brushwork and overlapping forms of his latest pieces evoke the free-verse, layered Beat poetry that he was a fan of as a teenager. Among the many accolades Preston received was his induction into the National Arts and Humanities Hall of Fame, which is located in the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
