In 1960, he relocated to the Monadnock Region and found employment as a heavy equipment mechanic for Bowman Flying Service at Keene Airport. Additionally, he served as both a selectman and planning board member in Richmond.

He was an accomplished Realtor for nearly four decades, opening Blais Real Estate in 1972 alongside his daughter Ruth. As past President of the Monadnock Region Board of Realtors and recipient of several awards for his efforts in this field, his real estate career spanned nearly 40 years until its end on August 13th 2017 at age 81.

George was a major force in the growth and development of Grande Prairie through his numerous accomplishments and awards. In 2007, he was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Personal Life

George Blais began his long career as a public official in Lake George, NY when he was barely 20 years old. He first served as police officer and later worked as a Warren County sheriff’s deputy.

He managed a bowling center, opened an amusement arcade, and served in numerous volunteer civic posts. As mayor, he sought to combat the village’s reputation for “riots” and underage drinking by cultivating family festivals and beautification projects that brought tourists from year-round.

Blais has dedicated the last 52 years to improving the community’s image. His initiatives have helped balance the needs of residents and businesses, establish the town as a family-friendly destination, consolidate local government services, extend tourism season hours and restore year-round commercial viability. Furthermore, he is an enthusiastic supporter of lakeweed abatement programs, boat inspection services for surrounding towns, wintertime road salt reduction initiatives by surrounding cities, as well as village beautification initiatives.
