Professional Career

David McKelvey spent his military service during the Vietnam War working as an army medic. After witnessing many young men die before surgery, he felt it was better to use his life for helping those still fighting to live.

On returning to Little Rock, Arkansas, David Mckelvey joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as a faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine and founding member of the Division of Genetics. His professional accomplishments and accolades are too numerous to mention, but highlights include serving as Director of Cancer Genetic Services at Winthrop P.rockefeller Cancer Institute and initiating the Adult Genetic Clinic at UAMS.

He is an outspoken supporter of hunger relief and anti-trafficking initiatives, having founded Lawyers vs. Hunger–an alliance of multiple law firms dedicated to fighting poverty and injustice in our communities.

Achievement and Honors

David McKelvey was a decorated military hero, earning the Distinguished Service Cross during World War I. During his career with the Army Air Force’s 94th Aero Squadron in France, David earned a reputation for his bravery and expert maneuvers while flying above enemy territory.

In addition to his military achievements, he was an exemplary man. A proud father, husband and avid golfer, he took great pleasure in coaching his children’s teams. Additionally, he was involved with his church and various religious ministries. Additionally, he enjoyed volunteering at the Rescue Mission Legal Clinic as well as serving on Bar committees or two.

Personal Life

David McKelvey was a loving family man who deeply loved his children and grandchildren. He had an infectious passion, dedication, and kindness which made all those around him feel special and cared for.

He loved to travel and explore exotic locations like the Caribbean. His inspiring life will be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

David graduated from medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1996 and went on to complete his residency at Texarkana, AR. Additionally, he earned a fellowship in medical genetics from the University of North Carolina.
