An argument over the height of a fence between homes escalated into tragedy when two men clashed violently over its height, leaving one dead and the other severely traumatised. Following an inquest into this event, a coroner has called for peace between both families involved.

Early Life and Education

August Wilson’s Fences is an epic play that explores the changing realities of Black American life in North America since 1957. Set within one family, this drama tracks their relationships and interactions with various social forces that impact daily experiences.

This play is an iconic example of realistic drama, in which characters’ conflict with one another is defined by relationships to outside forces outside their homes and as such gives an accurate portrayal of how Black American families experience and view history through their eyes.

This play explores changing relationships between whites and blacks in America, part of a contemporary black playwriting movement which draws from Ibsen and Chekhov’s works to depict black life realistically and subtly.

Professional Career

David was a man of many talents; from being a dedicated husband and father, an accomplished athlete and avid fly fisher to being part of his fraternity and proud member.

Professionally, he was an expert at digital realms as founder and CEO of Blue Pig Media – a digital marketing firm specializing in SEO, PPC advertising, content marketing and web development. Additionally, he was honored to join Pingry School Class of 1990, was an Eagle Scout and was on numerous boards of directors. All those lucky enough to call him friend will dearly miss his presence, the best way to honor him would be making a donation in his memory to one of these charities or one of your own choosing.

Achievement and Honors

David Fence was one of the top sabre prospects during his junior year at Notre Dame and displayed an elegant style and charismatic persona on the fencing field. His success with the Irish was highlighted by seven All-America finishes – including a final appearance at the NCAA Championships 1999!

He won National Junior Olympic titles at both under-15 and under-17 levels of fencing, was an active member of various youth national teams, and served as an alternate for Team USA Men’s Foil at World University Games 2017.

He has steadily advanced through the ranks, and is now a cadet (age 17 and under division) national team member. Recently he earned himself a spot for World Cup events taking place in Austria and France and also received an All-ACC Academic honor award for his academic performance in football.

Personal Life

David Fence is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently holds the position of High Councilor in Pueblo Colorado Stake. Additionally, he serves on Bell Bank’s board.

Dave founded Dakota Fence Company in 1972, selling and installing fencing, signs, guardrails and traffic control equipment throughout North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota Montana and Wyoming. Additionally he enjoys restoring vintage motorcycles as well as hunting.

Wilson won a Pulitzer Prize for Fences, the sixth play in his 10-part Pittsburgh Cycle series known as The Century Cycle, set during Henry Aaron’s baseball career during the 1950s. Fences explores both African-American experience and race relations in America.
