Early Life and Education
Dave Carey, a former carrier-based pilot in the Vietnam War and POW in Hanoi for five and half years, is an acclaimed motivational speaker who encourages audiences to draw from their strengths. Additionally, he serves as a coach and consultant, tailoring his programs to address specific organizational problems.
He has been a proud member of Local 802 since 1954. A child prodigy and self-taught drummer, he began performing on stage shows as young as five.
He went on to study jazz percussion in Jacksonville, Florida and at the University of North Florida (UNF). Throughout his career he performed with many notable artists such as Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, Joe Henderson, Buddy DeFranco, Arturo Sandoval and Maria Schneider; plus he was featured on numerous recordings and has taught music at both UNF and Florida Community College.
Professional Career
David Carey had been employed as an ad sales manager at The Daily Bruin in Los Angeles during the early 1980s, but in 1985 he followed his father’s advice and moved to New York City to pursue his ambition of publishing a magazine.
He quickly rose through the ranks at Esquire, serving as marketing services director and helping launch Smart Money in 1992. Since then, he’s been instrumental in turning Smart Money into “a permanent member” of the media landscape.
He has extensive litigation experience, including defending civil rights cases such as Wilson v. Williams regarding prison conditions and parole procedures; Lindenbaum v Realgy regarding free expression rights; State v Foreman regarding criminal justice reform; and many others.
