Kenneth Stanley Adams was three when he received a pair of black leather boots that he refused to take off, even before bedtime. Because he so cherished these boots, neighbors and family began calling him Boots.

He joined Phillips Petroleum Company as a warehouse clerk in 1920 and rose through its ranks to become its President at age 38, becoming one of the youngest CEOs at that time.
