Early Life and Education
Daniel Tammet was born in East London on 31 January 1979 to a working-class family and was the eldest of nine siblings. At 11 years old he was diagnosed with epilepsy; nevertheless he still excelled academically, winning both town prizes for reading ability (Eager Reader Award and Student of the Year Awards) as well as earning two certificates as Student of the Year from his teachers.
He studied law at Duke University, serving on the committee that desegregated its graduate and professional schools. Following graduation from law school, he joined the North Carolina state Senate.
He serves on various key committees and works extensively on redistricting efforts. As a partner at Blue LLP, he specializes in education, civil rights, and economic justice issues.
Daniel is an award-winning musician, composer, and producer. He has performed as a keyboardist, guitarist, vocalist and guest lecturer at universities in the U.S, Japan, Korea and Taiwan; was featured with Honolulu Symphony; and currently acts as an advisor and clinician for Yamaha Guitars.
He provides administrative support to Liesel Pritzker Simmons and oversees her firm’s operations, such as HR systems and employee benefits. In addition, he works with Blue Haven Civics on projects designed to strengthen democracy, drive positive policy change and create a fairer economy.
Every year, Daniel opens his restaurant Daniel for an evening of dining and entertainment to raise funds for Citymeals on Wheels, an organization providing homebound elderly with meals in New York City. This event typically raises over $100,000. He has also collaborated with luthier Pepe Romero to design instruments under Spalted Mango label such as Tiny Tenor, XS Soprano and ST Concert Ukuleles for this label.

Daniel has enjoyed an exceptional career that includes eight number ones on the UK music chart and selling over 15 million albums and videos worldwide. He was awarded an Honorary MBE, featured on This Is Your Life, and won multiple awards both within Ireland and Britain for both his music and charitable efforts.

He is also an accomplished composer, having written music for film (such as the Coca-Cola commercial featuring George the Poet), soundtracks, and his own albums. Based in Raleigh, NC with his partner, he relishes travelling and practicing various forms of art.
