Early Life and Education

Melvin Beaunorus Tolson was an African American poet and professor who used modernist traditions to explore issues surrounding race. His dedication to poetic form and positive outlook set him apart from many of his contemporary poets and teachers.

Tolson’s work from the 1930s, A Gallery of Harlem Portraits, shows evidence of free verse influence; later poems show more phrasally-based enjambment rather than Imagist sculptural precision. Yet critical engagement with his writing from 1940s shows how Tolson bridged modernism with proletarian literature.

Rumors swirled surrounding Tolson and J. Edgar Hoover’s longstanding friendship, prompting speculation of romantic involvement between them. Tolson met Hoover for breakfast and lunch daily; together they traveled on official business; upon Hoover’s death, Tolson performed his funeral services.

Professional Career

He earned critical acclaim for his portrayals of real-life figures such as South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), Muslim minister Malcolm X in Malcolm X (1992), boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter from The Hurricane (1999), football coach Herman Boone from Remember the Titans (2000) and drug kingpin Frank Lucas in American Gangster (2007) – not forgetting appearances in The Lone Ranger (2013) and Call Me by Your Name (2015)

He has extensive coaching experience within the English Premier League for clubs like Oldham Athletic, Bradford City, York City and Southend United. In his free time he enjoys golf and visiting local breweries with his family; playing Minecraft and other video games together is something they share as a hobby.

Achievement and Honors

Tolson was an exceptional educator and mentor to his students, including James Farmer and Heman Sweatt – later civil rights activists themselves – encouraging them to develop into well-rounded individuals rather than solely focus on academic studies.

Debate coach Samuel Stambler made headlines throughout the segregated American South with his teams’ victories against USC (University of Southern California) before an audience of 2000 in 1935.

He began writing poetry, which he published as A Gallery of Harlem Portraits in 1979. Later in life he developed cancer, forcing him to undergo surgery – this may have postponed death until Dr. Wiley Wilson Tolson became the inaugural Carver Foundation Fellow Lecturer at Tuskegee in 1966.

Personal Life

In 1817 Benjamin purchased Bellfair Mills on Chappawamsic Run in Stafford County and expanded it into one of the most successful mills in the region, amassing an immense fortune along the way.

He was best-known as the director of Wiley College’s debate team. His teams would often compete in national challenges and excel, even taking their show overseas to Oxford University to face its champions!

He developed a close friendship with J. Edgar Hoover, the first head of the FBI. They reportedly enjoyed an intimate relationship. While employed with the bureau, Tolson was responsible for budget and administration as well as acting director for short while after Hoover died on May 2, 1972.
