Benjamin Mota Arrested in Death of 38-Year-Old Woman Camping Near Flagstaff, Arizona
FLAGSTAFF — An Oregon man has been charged in connection with the death of 38-year-old woman traveling with him to northern Arizona. Coconino County Sheriff’s officials received information from police in Milwaukie that suggested they were camping near Flagstaff.
Sheriff’s deputies began reaching out to campers and handing out flyers; one recognized Mota. Mota was eventually located driving Wheeler’s vehicle in Oregon, where she is being held on second-degree murder charges before she can be extradited back to Arizona for extradition proceedings.
Early Life and Education
Mota was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and attended College of Southern Nevada before beginning a part-time broadcaster position with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Fox Sports en Espaol television broadcasts since 2007. Since 2021 he has also worked as player/coach with them and an analyst for MLB Network; furthermore he and his wife also operate the Manny Mota International Foundation which supports children from both Dominican Republic and United States.
Motta has made two appearances for the Cleveland Indians this season as a pitcher, earning one win with an earned run average of 3.35 before signing with the Mets as a free agent.
Motta serves as a part-time first sergeant at Grissom Air Force Base as the public affairs superintendent for the 434th Air Refueling Wing during drill weekends, hoping this additional duty role can serve as a springboard to becoming a full-time first sergeant when his active service ends.
Responsibility in this role includes mentoring new soldiers and offering guidance to current ones. He has also contributed significantly towards Seven Swords Media being recognized on Inc magazine’s “5000 Fastest Growing Companies” list as well as being instrumental in landing accounts with Smithsonian Institution and Benjamin Moore paints.
Benjamin Mota is married and the proud parent of four children. In his free time he enjoys traveling, running, gardening and renovating his home as well as volunteering at his Manny Mota International Foundation which was established more than 30 years ago.
Mota began his minor league career with the Class A Springfield Giants of the Eastern League in 1957 and spent two seasons there before being promoted to AA Springfield Giants of the Western League where he hit.304 over 126 games.
After moving to Rampart Division and spending nearly 11 years there as a detective, he worked the Burglary/Property Crimes table as well as Homicide/Robbery tables as Bureau Detective Coordinator for three deputy chiefs. When not working or being assigned duties he enjoys golfing and spending time with family.
