West Adams is an eclectic residential area in Los Angeles that lies close to beaches, Downtown, and Culver City.

It lies just east of Interstate 10 and borders La Cienega Boulevard to the east, providing easy access to Mid-City, Leimert Park and Jefferson Park historic districts.

Early Life and Education

Ansel Adams was born in San Francisco on February 20, 1902. His parents sent him to various private schools.

He was an restless child who struggled to fit in at school. Additionally, he was self-conscious and uncomfortable with his appearance; particularly his nose.

However, his interests in photography and piano helped him grow up quickly. Eventually becoming a professional photographer and serving as president of Sierra Club.

His photographs of Yosemite National Park and the American Southwest had an enormous effect on shaping public opinion regarding wilderness preservation. Furthermore, his photography from World War II internment camps also had significant sway over policy decisions.

In the 1930s he was profoundly moved by the work of American photographer Paul Strand and became convinced that photography provided ample opportunities to make striking images. Working alongside Strand for several years and eventually consulting to both Polaroid and Hasselblad as well as numerous photographers directly or informally; developing his legendary “zone system” of controlling exposure and development that allowed photographers to creatively envision a subject before producing photographs that expressed it visually.
