Early Life and Education

John Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts on October 30, 1735 to John and Susanna Boylston Adams – descendants of Mayflower pilgrims who ran shoemaking shops, served as Congregational deacons, and participated in local politics. Adams excelled academically, graduating Harvard College with distinction before teaching school for several years prior to becoming a lawyer.

He married Abigail Smith (1744-1818), the daughter of a minister. Abigail was well-read, intelligent and supported her husband’s career throughout their marriage; together they maintained an extensive correspondence throughout their lives.
