Lucas Oil Speedway is one of the premier dirt racing facilities, featuring an oval track, off-road course and artificial lake known as Lake Lucas.
He produced and co-wrote both Indiana Jones films Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom with director Steven Spielberg in close cooperation.
Early Life and Education
George Lucas was raised in Modesto, California where his father sold office supplies and owned a walnut farm. George initially wanted to become a race car driver but an almost fatal car crash before graduating high school changed his plans drastically.
His study at the University of Southern California led to acclaimed student films. One, 1965’s THX 1138 4EB, explored an imagined dystopian future where people are subordinate to technology; its stark sets and use of extreme close-ups distinguished it from other futuristic sci-fi movies.
Lucas soon after won a scholarship from Warner Brothers to observe Francis Ford Coppola, another UCLA alum. This would become his gateway into Hollywood.
Professional Career
Lucas excelled as an outstanding basketball player from high school to college and the NBA. His college team won two NCAA championships while he played on both U.S. Men’s National and Olympic Teams (starter for 1964 Olympic squad in Rome).
Reed suffered an injury early in 1971-72 and Lucas quickly came into the lineup, averaging 10 points and 7 rebounds per game.
Lucas was an exceptional basketball player whose outside shooting ability transformed defensive strategies across the league. In 308 NBA regular-season appearances spanning 308 seasons he made 14,857 points while grabbing 9,306 rebounds for 14,857 total points scored and 9306 total rebounds gained; five-time All-Star in both the ABA and NBA. Lucas died October 31, 2010 while playing in Portland Oregon; his funeral services took place back home in Middletown Ohio shortly thereafter.
Achievement and Honors
Lucas excelled on both basketball and guitar with Middletown High School to lead them to an undefeated state title during his senior year. Additionally, he joined his family band and performed as lead guitarist.
Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), established by him, soon became one of the leading visual effects and sound companies in Hollywood, winning multiple awards and accolades along the way.
Lucas has earned some of the entertainment industry’s highest accolades, such as the Irving G. Thalberg Award and Oscar nominations for American Graffiti and Star Wars. Additionally, he received the NAACP Vanguard award for raising understanding and awareness regarding racial issues; additionally he is inducted into California Hall of Fame.
Personal Life
George Lucas has made significant strides toward improving education with his foundation, encouraging project-based learning and other reforms in education. In addition, he serves on numerous public boards including Amtrak California’s Capitol Corridor Joint Power Authority; Yolo County Transportation District; Valley Clean Energy (VCE), Yolo County’s clean power provider; and The Nature Conservancy.
After high school, Lucas attended Modesto Junior College before enrolling at the University of Southern California film school. There, he created various short films including Electronic Labyrinth THX 1138 4EB which won first prize at the 1967-68 National Student Film Festival; Warner Bros also awarded him with a scholarship to observe Francis Ford Coppola’s Finian’s Rainbow production; with Coppola as cofounder he established American Zoetrope as an antidote to studio control over filmmakers’ creative efforts.
